Nope, my weekend projects are not at all like that.  
Mine are about as productive, because the last project (or 10) was a
hurry up deal where I had to have the vehicle up and running quick so
the tools never got picked up and there may still be a motor hanging
from the cherry picker.  Of course it is still on there because the
'picker doesn't roll very well because of a bad wheel from an earlier
mishap.  I can't put the motor on a stand because I keep forgetting to
get longer bolts and I can't set it on a pallet because I've never
gotten pallets made (for the pallet jack) that fit out around the legs
of the cherry picker.  I have new wheels for the 'picker but they are
bigger and better and consequently don't fit without alteration and I
don't have the metal for that yet.  If that was fixed, I could move the
motor to a corner out of the way.  Did I mention that I have a 6 y/o son
who is building a robot (in appearance only, he is smart, but not that
smart) and requires help to run power tools.  There is also the 4 y/o
daughter who occasionally needs help getting her creeper through the
maze of jack stands so she can lay under the vehicle I am working on and
shine the trouble light in my eyes so I can see better.  I also have to
occasionally break from my work to judge bike vs. trike races, kiss
owwies, or put a pretty back in hair.  Then the wife wants the weed
eater started.  I think she is getting a rechargeable one with the
easily replaceable strips of string for Mother's day.  Of course we are
on ambulance duty most every weekend so I can't get dirty or run to the
neighboring town for longer bolts.  

I don't get much done, but I wouldn't have it any other way. <g>

i think this depends on a lot of factors...

now i don't know if Ed is like this or not, but we'll use my dad for an
example concerning "weekend projects".

step one:  check your calendar for an appropriate three or four day
weekend.
or any weekend that looks like maybe might work.

step two: gather up all the materials and tools you'll need a couple
months
before-hand.  make sure they're all organized and laid out, with extra
materials and fasteners (and maybe extra tools) in case of mistakes and
miscalculations, etc.  lay out an extra-well-stocked first aid kit.

step three:  invite a dozen or more of your old buddies from high
school,
work, the Army, etc out to your farmstead to "help".  include a full
side of
beef, about fifty cases of beer, several barbecues, and one old piano
set up
on the patio.

step four:  consume all the beer and beef, spend all night every night
of
the weekend drinking and eating and singing old songs by the piano.

step five:  make plans for another weekend "some time soon" (whatever
that
means) to try to get this project done.

step six:  repeat steps one through five for a year and a half before
finally hiring somebody else to do the job.  or before extorting your
son to
compleat the task under threat of scrapping his trucks when he's not
looking.

it's no wonder these projects snowball till they're unmanageable.

your experiences may vary, of course.
