Michael-
I don't know if there's a starter for the diesel. I think not, but I don't
KNOW.
If the parts are all stock, your starter still most likely just needs to be
fixed properly. The possible culprits are all the same. I would add to the
mix a defective torque converter. If it's loose, it could be moving when the
starter engages. Likely? probably not. Possible? definitely.
Ryan is correct about his analysis of the remote solenoid situation, and
that this starter should be tested and repaired, properly this time. I would
add that I expect the starters whose problems I masked to last 20-30 years,
even though they tended to hang, because the operating conditions are now
optimal. The 3 years I've gotten out of them is "so far." I see no reason to
expect them to fail.
I mentioned the bearings because if the shaft is loose, the assembly can
bind. A small amount of grease on the starter ring teeth often helps to free
up the assembly as well. It is very common for a starter to fail because one
of the bearings fails. The symptoms are the same as though the brushes have
worn out, or the windings have a partial short. Too much current, not
enough torque. Sticking is simply one of the other possibilities.
