    As you have read from the responses, the "O-Ring" is the only
sealing part that is there by original design...BUT...
    The gasket is a better design.  Why?  The "O-Ring" looses its
effectiveness after time, AND, it does not seal between the two carbs.
Also, expansion, contraction, oxidation of the surfaces, etc, etc, cause
warping and wear of the mating surfaces of the pedestal and manifold.
When the pedestal nut loosens, the "O-Ring" will usually keep the seal
from the outside world...briefly, but creates cross flow between the two
planes of the manifold and carburators.  This makes synchronizing the
carbs a more difficult task if there is cross flow between the pedestal
and manifold.
    Of course, thousands of owners out ther have absolutely no problems
with this seal, or their mechanic just keeps the o-ring replaced and
pedestal nut properly torqued.  End result is is if it was running fine
with the gasket, what is the harm in leaving it in place??
