Shims - the closest I saw to any particular "shims" on the bearing
retainers was what I took to be the remains of a gasket on the axle
shaft I put into the driver's side (we didn't mark left/right 'shafts,
and they both appeared the same length.  I figured it would be easier to
adjust the big-nut if it wasn't against the fence on the driver's side)
