There is a photo of a variation on this ID method in the FAQ at:
http://www.binderbulletin.org/faq/7.htm#7

It shows a tape measure from "peak to peak" (where the heads, block & valley
pan come together) on the back side of the block near the bellhousing. This
dimension is 7 inches on a V-304, and 8 inchec on a 345/392.

Photo was from issue #11 (January, 1998) of the Binder Bulletin.
