Starters

Jeff,
I apparently stuck my neck out, thinking that I knew something I didn't 
know. (Not too unusual, but always a little disconcerting)  At an 
International gathering somewhere, someone had one of the mini-gear 
driven starters on his machine. I assumed that since they were 
replacements for Delco starters, that the conversion of one to fit a 
Scout was probably no big thing. 

I'm told now that if it is possible, and apparently it is, it is a rather 
big thing. I can't remember who had the mini, but perhaps someone on the 
digest knows who that was, or someone else who has done it. 

An auto machinist that I talked to said that the field coils and housing 
are the same, but that the drive gear teeth didn't match, among other 
problems, in doing a conversion.
