Net probs and Scout probs

Tom-(and Digesters!)

Hey, buddy, good to hear from you. I didn't have any trouble with my
digest stuff, but sorry to hear that you did.
Put the carb back on my Scout the other night and took it out and drove
it for a while tonight. It is running much better and much stronger,
but doing the same *********, #######!!!! thing. It starts off okay,
but as it starts to pick up revs it hesitates, with a complete lack of
ignition. When it does fire, it seems to me like it's "pinging." That
is really what the sound is like is a "ping." If I floor it it does not
do it, but at really slow to gradual acceleration, it does it the
majority of the time. On occasion, it will do it five or so times
before it gets over the RPM point where it is better again, which causes
a major hesitation in acceleration-not comfortable to be pulling out
into traffic knowing this is a possibility. I think it would be fine on
the highway, as the revs are high enough. However, when it first
started doing this, this is how it started and progressed to where it
would never get over 25 miles per hour because it would "stall" so much.
This is what inspired the amazing amount of work I have done to this
rusty pile of iron.
I have changed tuned it up three times, changed the coil, distributor,
spark plug wires, dist. cap, rotor, condensor, points (all of the tune
up parts each time I tuned it up), polished the inside of the cylinders
to grind down old carbon deposits, rebuilt the carb, retimed it after
almost every procedure, run it empty and put in new gas, and put some
gas treatment through it, changed the fuel filter, and I'm sure a few
other things.
Does anyone have any friggin' idea what is wrong with this thing?
I have had a couple of different friends that are excellent mechanics go
through stuff with me, and noone has any new suggestion that has not
been checked. I did have the problems with one of the carb throttle
body to bowl section screws, but it seemed pretty tight and solid. It
was one of the outside edge screws on a 2210 Holley carb, on a Scout 345
('73, AT, AC). I am really about at my wit's end and am thinking about
tossing the damn thing.
I will atte,pt to re-time it one more time, but after that, I may give
up unless someone comes up with something. I have not had it running in
nearly a year-at least not to the road-worthy point-and that is not my
idea of a good vehicle.
I am beginning to lean toward it being an electrical thing. It does
seem to get worse when it gets warmed up too much, which makes me leary
of taking it on the highway at all to really test drive it. This also
was part of how it started out-I would drive on the highway and it would
last about ten or fifteen minutes until it got good and warm, then would
hesitate if I was not accelerating-which meant slow-down-speed-up
driving, or driving at 90 miles an hour. Once warmed up, it would do it
at low speeds. When on the freeway at high speeds it would be so bad
that it would begin to "Buck" quite violently when the micro-stalls"
would come too close together, making me feel like an ass, and
occasionally making me feel unsafe.
If a Gold Box goes out what happens? I know that some have indicted
heat in the failure of a gold box, but I thought that that was more of
an all or nothing proposition. Either it would start or would not. Any
chance that mine is not completely broke but simply tired and on its way
out?
Some of you may remember all of the tales of woe of what I have done to
this heap, and none of them have worked. What happens if I have a bad
or sticky valve? Poor seating? Could that be it? I dare not take it
to Anything Scout, for fear it will cost more than the whole stinking
pile is worth to me now!!! And who knows, it may break down on the way
there and I would even have to pay to have it towed!
So, that's my cheery, inspirational message for the evening! I only
hope that I made you all feel better about your plots in life, as you
have not been unlucky enough to have come into contact with this spawn
of the devil disguised as a Binder!

Help!!!

Michael

P.S. I also hire out for motivational speeches!
