Electronic Ignition "Amplifiers"

I could be wrong, but I believe the "amplifier" in an electronic
ignition setup refers to amplification of the signal induced
by the reluctor as it spins past the pickup coil. It is a small
signal and must be amplified before it can be used for
"switching" the current flow through the coil. I doesn't
actually "amplify" the voltage across the primary of the coil.
