RE: scout 80
Nathaniel:
Having bought a '65 Scout 80 within the last 6 months I can offer these
opinions. We paid $1200 for ours which is in similar condition (solid body,
rusty floor panels) and I have since come to think that this may be a little
overpriced. In searching the Binder Bulletin classifieds and reading other
digester's posts you can pick up a decent Model 80 for anywhere between $700
and $1000. Of course they may be located 6 states away!
Bottom line, for $1500 I'd expect the thing to be in pretty solid mechanical
condition. Easy starting, smooth running engine with no oil smoke.
Transmission and transfer case operational in all gears/ranges. No clanks or
clicks from the front or rear diffs. Steering fairly tight and stable. You're
always going to have oil leaks so don't count them as defects (unless there
aren't any and then it may be worth $1.5K!) Otherwise, take off $100-200 for
each problem area and make the guy an offer.
Just some opinions from a first-time Scout buyer.
