The engines should be interchangable as you have heard and I'm not sure
why you were told a 392 wouldn't fit where a 345 would they are the same
size as far as I know.

Dropping the V-8 into a 4 cylinder Scout body will be more than a bolt-in
however.  The 4 cylinder was leaned over a little and the carburetor down
on the side of the engine to reduce overall height.  When IH put the V-8
in, they raised the body 2" and then moved the radiator and engine ahead
about 6" to get the room needed.  Also in the Model 80's, the axles are
rather weak for the torque of a V-8.  A swap isn't impossible, just be
aware of these problem areas.
