Sometimes you can correct dinged up threads by using a 3-cornered file.
Get a small one or one that has little or no roundness to the corners(so
that you cut sharp bottomed threads).  If the nut doesn't sit one these
threads when tight, don't worry about removing metal.

Snap-on and others make a universal thread restorer that adjusts to any
size and has different cutters for different thread pitches. Some parts
stores rent tools, you might check around.
