I had a similar problem with a 79 I used to own. The outer lock nut had loosened and fallen off, in doing so it wiped out the threads on the end of the spindle. I removed the caliper and rotor then used my 4 inch grinder and carefully rounded the end of the spindle. Through it all back together and never had a problem again. Nick
