Gerry,
The problem with the visor mirror is a common problem with this model. 
Here's a temporary fix. The problem is caused by what appears to be "hot 
glue" of some type, being soften over time & oozing from around the mirror 
and getting on the plastic slide track. If you will push hard, it should 
break lose once you slide the cover open, apply some type of 'goop off', the 
stuff for removing the sticky residue from stickers. Take a Q tip or pipe 
cleaner and apply the Goop off' on the upper & lower slide tracks . Work the 
slide back & forth and then wiping with a paper towel or shop cloth. This 
will work until more of the 'glue' gets on the track. Mine would last about 
3-4 months before I had to redo.

I saw the same thing happening ti the rear view mirror. On hot days I would 
find this stuff coming out from around the glass part of the mirror. I would 
clean it the same way until I replaced it with a self dimming mirror from an 
E38.
