BMW's GPS Technology

Dear List Members:
I was reading up on GPS technology over the weekend
and every article that I read says that every GPS
system
has two things required in order for it to work, a
receiver and an antenna.
I have a 1999 540i with BMW's navigational system, and
I am definitely sure that my car does not have an
antenna (at least one that I can see or recognize).
Assuming that I am right, does it mean that BMW's
system is different from what the rest of the world
uses?
I will appreciate any thoughful insights/knowledge.
