2002 steering

Heavy steering on a 2002 can be caused by several different things. The last
of which is the steering box. The track rod ends get rusty. The track rod
(some call it a drag link) is attached to the idler arm, tie rods and steering
box. Jack up the front of the car and cut the wheel, if the track rod is very
bad it will creak. It is possible to fit grease fittings on it at the pivot
points.

The bushings on the idler arm can get worn, usually this results in the
steering being too loose. The opposite can occur too.

Next thing which can cause stiff steering are the strut bearing. These are the
guys at the top of the strut. They get dry and when they are the steering will
be hard to return after taking a corner. You can drench them with WD40 and
then pack them with grease. This can be done without taking everything apart
too.

Low tires will make the steering very heavy. Check the pressure in them.

Finally, an improperly adjusted steering box will impact the steering. This is
the last thing to check.

Your speedo problem is the speedo, not related to the conversion. Speedo head
has a problem. In 75 diff ratio was same for automatic and standard.

Anyone want any suggestions on whom to vote for BMWCCA Treasurer? <G>
