In my experience, its one of two sensors...camshaft or crankshaft.
When my camshaft sensor went, I got a couple of odd stalls, as well as some
spits and sputters at odd times. Restarting the car will clear the problem
and it will return again in time.
The oddest symptom seemed to be that when I hit the gas I never knew what
was going to happen...sometimes I would get GREAT acceleration (my 328 felt
like an M3) and other times I would get bupkus (my 328 felt like a 318).
