Valve tune up

Mornin' folks,

I wanted to ask the collective if they new what the symptoms are when a
valve tune up is need?  I just bought a '90 E30 325i and I'm doing misc.
repairs to it, and I hear ticking sounds coming from underneath the valve
cover and I'm worried that they may need to be adjusted before they do any
damage to the engine.   

btw, the car has 95k  and no record or sign of the valves ever being
adjusted.
