E30 oil use

I have a '90 325is and am wondering if it's rate of oil usage is normal.
I change my oil about every 3-3,500 miles and use 20-50W.  It seems that
every time my oil low light comes on about halfway between changes and I
need to add about a quart to bring it up to level.
Is this normal?  If not, what might the problem be? 
Any input is appreciated.
