mystery bump

Here's a new attempt a most stupid question.
On a '90 325is (and others I would imagine), what is the small (approx. 1"),
round, raised oblect located on the upper left corner of the climate control
panel?
I have wondered this for some time, yet cannot seem to find anything about
it in any manuals or elsewhere.
Anything you know is more than I do.
