Brian's method is the canonical way of doing this. remember to put check
valves in the lines so that the fuel can only flow one way in this setup.

in series, if one craps out, the other is stuck pushing or pulling
through the bad pump. could lead to shortened life for the one
that isn't dead already. besides, i don't know what happens if
a fuel pump is receiving fuel at the intake at the same pressure
it's supposed to be supplying, and i'm not sure i want to find out.
