Re: replicas (SS100)..

Of course, greg, one must remember that the drive train of the REAL SS-100 was nothing to write home about as it consisted of a roughly 2.5 liter OHV Meadows or Anzani off-the-shelf I-6 motor with probably 60-70 horsepower (in the modern sense. England used funny HP ratings in those days (most likely for tax purposes) and I never have seen any real correlation between modern HP figures and the old English ones.). It's altogether possible that as neat as an SS-100 replica with a 4.2 liter, 265 HP XK-E engined SS-100 replica would be, the more prosaic Ford I-6 truck motor would likely be more in keeping with the real thing.

I still insist, however that SOMEBODY in England made an SS-100 replica during the early '60's using a more modern XK drivetrain. I know I've seen one and read about it. Problem is, it was a long time ago and I don't remember the details.

So this got me curious, and a quick google revealed
http://www.intermeccanica.org/vehicles/squire/squiress100.htm where the
first paragraph is:

The Squire SS-100 is an almost exact, full size replica of the 1937 - 1939
Jaguar SS-100. The car was commissioned by Auto Sport Importers, Inc. of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and made by Automobilli Intermeccanica in
Trofarello, Italy between 1970 and 1975, reportedly by Fiat technicians
who were moonlighting evenings and weekends.

So, it would appear there is an interesting italian twist to at least
these replicas. :)

Of course, their beauty is truly only skin deep. It looks like these used
Ford underpinnings, and not jaguar components.

That site has an interesting list of cars, but the most odd has to be
http://www.intermeccanica.org/vehicles/mustangsw/mustangsw.htm.

The jaguar SS100, not to mention all kinds of other kit cars and "custom"
cars are interesting, but I just about never see any Alfas. Did anyone
(individual or company) set to out seriously make Alfa kit cars or Alfa
replicas?
