One more Autodelta (not likely last..)
greg e-mailed me about some opinions, and between his e-mail, and some more
thinking, I think this case is all about fraud, not emission nor crash.
First of all, there is so little to be gained by spending money in the
courts, I think both the DOT and the EPA would just crush the cars and be
done with it. That is a rather substantial penalty in itself. I've
followed quite a few cases for both, and most minor offences are settled
out of court.
On the other hand, some of the rumors I've heard- the proposed "dealers"
had to put up some serious cash for the honor of selling these cars. And
I'm pretty sure that Alfa Romeo, Italy, did NOT want this to happen. Not
sure why- hard to damage a reputation of cars not being sold here... Now
add the whole corporate fraud situation we see now, and I think this is all
about getting the money back for this whole program.
Are these guys bad guys? While I said they deserve their punishment, they
might not be. It's possible that they got into this far over their
abilities, and similar to some litigation toward Shelby, are getting sued
for not delivering...
I'm sure we will all know in the next few months.
