You're likely correct (unless there's some additional trauma you haven't 
mentioned). My suggestion would be to wander over to Jon Norman's place (Alfa 
Parts, 510.525.9435, Berkeley) and pick up a set of o-ring pins along with the new 
head gasket. They're great - brass pins machined to fit the block and head 
and they have a shoulder that both keeps the o-ring where it belongs but also 
sets the depth of the pin into the head and block properly.

No affiliation, just a satisfied customer (with a dry and clean block).
