Spider oil leak

Hi All, my '84 Spider Veloce inexplicably started a high volume oil leak at 
the rear, exhause manifold side of the engine....its just pouring out while the 
engine is running.  I suspect this is a common problem and head gaskets and 
o-rings have been suggested as a cause but I'd like to seek the list wisdom 
before removing the head....???

This old Alfa has been marvelously reliable since I bought it with 135,000 
miles......now has 150,000.
