Re: Fluid in the steering box of spider
Yes there is fluid in the steering box and it probably is 90W gear oil. On
some steering boxes, the seal at the bottom has gone bad and it won't hold
oil. The cure is to replace the seal and probably the bushing. As an interim
measure, I have used light grease (such as CV Joint grease) with good
results.
There should be a separate fill hole on the top cover. It may be a threaded
plug or may be a rubber pop-out grommet.
In either case, fill it until you can see the oil level and leave a little air
space to allow expansion and contraction.

Subject: Fluid in the steering box of spider
I removed the steering play in my spider 1986 yesterday by tightening the
adjusting screw at the top of the steering box following Pat Braden
instructions.
Is there some fluid within the steering box to smoother the operation?
If yes, what is the fluid kind?
If so, I suppose that I should add fluid through the same adjusting screw at
the top of the steering box.
To which level I should add fluid ?
Regards
Damien
