Spider water pump

Kevin:

Just double-nut the lower two studs and pull them out. Gives you just
enough clearance to get the pump off, and saves all the big-nut angst. Some
people replace those two studs with bolts so as to be ready for the next
time, but despite my experience (below) I think that's a bit pessimistic.

I'd recommend giving your new pump a very careful once-over visually before
fitting it. The first one I fitted to my '86 Spider was part of a bad batch
with a small casting flaw that weeped oil steadily, right through a small
pin hole in the metal and onto the fan... The shop that sold it to me was
appropriately contrite and replaced it without question, but changing the
pump twice, with the engine in the car, was tedious. Problem is, it's hard
to know if it's going to leak until you get the engine running. The flaw in
mine showed as a small irregularity on the surface of the lump that used to
be tapped for the revcounter drive on older models.

Good luck!
