Kevin Smith is wrestling with his pulley nut:

Get yourself a Vise-Grip chain wrench at Sears or a place that
has plumbing tools. Fasten the chain wrench around the crank
pulley with the handles pointed downward toward the ground at an
angle. Add a length of pipe to the end of the chain wrench
handle so that it reaches the ground. Arrange all this such
that when you torque on the nut, the chain wrench handle/pipe is
turned against the ground.
You will either get the nut off, or you will have discovered a
nice way to lift the engine up. This works with the engine in
place, but I've never tried it with the engine out.
