Left-Hand Lug Nuts for Alloy Wheels
In AD7-1460 Randy King asked about suitable lug-nuts for his Panasports on
his '69 GT Veloce (which has both right-hand and left-hand threads, as all
pre-1972 Alfas did) and three days later in AD7-1468 Milt Simon asked a
similar question - "I cannot find 12mm x 1.50 mag-type lug nuts, the chrome
acorn-type that go about 3/4" into the wheel. The standard ones for the
later Spiders are EASY, but the left-hand style are impossible. Any advice?
To change the studs wont help because i believe they screw in."
Working backwards from the easy part, the studs DO NOT screw in but are a
press fit. The front hubs 105.41.21.400.00 are the same on 1750s and 2000s,
so there should be no difficulty using the later studs and any nuts which
will work with alloys on later Spiders, if one is willing to forgo the nicety
of left-handed threads.
If one is a purist (or wishes to be one-up on the bastardizers at the
concours) there MAY (perhaps, not certain) be a solution in the OEM lug nuts
used on the optional alloy wheels on the 1750. The optional alloy wheels for
the 1750 (Fergat 5-1/2J x 14) may or may not have the same wheel-to-nut
interface as the Panasport (etc) - don't know, don't have either, let alone
both. However, the 1750 used the same bolts (105.41.21.417.01 left hand,
105.41.21.418.01 right hand) for both the steel wheels and the alloys, but
used different nuts: 105.32.28.100.01 right-hand thread for cast wheels,
105.32.28.101.01 left-hand thread for cast wheels. The 105.32 prefix
identifies these nuts as having been used originally on the GTA, if that
helps. The local dealer might not have them on hand, but they should be
obtainable; and if not, (or if they don't work for other reasons) the late
studs and nuts should be a practical and readily available solution.
