I just smogged my GTV6 which was in similar shape before I brought it into
compliance with the LAW. No kitty cats, funny afm, s-cams, and running so
rich, the gas was blue. It did not have headers (obvious visual fail, unless
your attendant is Italian).
After the cats were put on, and when the thing  was leaned out, it did pass.
This was with a 3 litre engine. All done with the checkbook method this
time, work is eating into my hobby time, the horror..

Here is an interesting smog story for the 164LS enthusiasts

I was recently thrown out of a smog station.
The attendant could not pick up the rpms of my 95 164 LS. He laid this
figure eight-shaped piece of plastic on the engine (it was connected to the
big, scary, and red smog machine), and pronounced that he cannot do the
smog, because my car has no spark plugs and no battery.  When I told him
that the battery was in the trunk, and that this was a direct ignition
arrangement, and that he should place his device closer, or anywhere else
other than where he put it last....well, he became impatient and told me to
take the car back to the dealer. Things deteriorated when I told him that
there was not one around at all.
Being calm and apologetic had the opposite effect (I was not being my usual
smart-ass, I promise) and I was gently told to "Get Out!" (No Soup for
You!!).
I took the car to the place next door where it passed. I thought about
waving my certificate in front of his nose, but decided that I was too
evolved for that, at least this time.

People go funny when you throw a curve ball at their sense of the "Norm".
Hopefully, this attendant will not breed abundantly and direct his offspring
to be in the same trade.
