re: New owner of Milano Silver, mfg. date 11/86

Peter T. Robinson asks:

>1. What is the best solution to a leaking timing belt tensioner?

Replace it with a re-engineered one. Seriously, this is a classic
Milano problem, Sperry Valve works makes an excellent replacement
that will not leak.

>2. Where can I get an owner's manual and a service manual?

Owner's Manual from the AROC, (you are a member aren't you?) or
Paul Spruell Alfa. Service manual from IAP, Ricambi, Spruell
and I'm sure a handful of others, (although I must say I just got
an excellent CD ROM that has all of the above and then some on it
for less then the price of a service manual).

>3. What is the proper fuel in this car for street use?

The highest octane you can get at the pump. It'll love you back for it.

>4. I have the chance to buy a complete Milano Platinum that was running
>when the timing belt broke. I know the pistons hit the valves but does this

Generally when this happens it's time to take her to the bone yard,
(at least for most people). If you're lucky, $400 or so. Unlucky,
3k+ for repairs. Problem is ALL the ones I've seen went on the
highway, and the faster the speed, the more damage. Remember what the manual
says about replacing it every 30K miles. Learn it. Live it.

>5. I would appreciate a list of good sources for parts.

Too many to name. E-mail me off list and I'll point you to some, but
first I'll gonna pitch the AROC and all its ads for suppliers.

>6. The ignition key cannot be removed from the lock. Any suggestions?

Uh-oh. Something's broke inside. Expect to get it replaced. Then
again, you can take it apart and figure out it needs replacing.

>7. The windshield is cracked. The local glass shop quotes $160 to replace
>it. Are they likely to have the knowledge for a proper replacement. If
>not... suggestions?

This sounds about right for a repair place, but make sure it's genuine
Alfa.

Like I said, e-mail me off list and I'll provide numbers and addresses.

On another note, It's good to see Joel on the list, and over at Centerline.
I've missed him at IAP, and appreciated his help with such things as
the AirFlow Meter on my Milano, a new Head for my '77 Spider, and even
an SU fuel pump problem with my '52 MG. If you have occasion to
do business with Centerline you owe it to yourself to bend his ear a bit.
I know he's missed at IAP.

Best,

Scott Allen
