Y2K woes

The following excerpt was taken from a communication between Fiat and
Ardona:

".....Bosch has confirmed that y2k does have an effect on certain
configurations of Motronic. The defect affects the rev limiter....the
limiter
logic recognizes the present redline as the calender year 2000, which
signals
the controller to provide spark for maximum rpm, even though the
throttle
angle may indicate otherwise...."
" Bosch has offered a contract to do reprogramming. We, at Fiat, are
not
interested due to the small number of cars sold in the USA, which are
now out
of warranty..."

Fact or Fiction?

Sounds like fiction to me, even if the logic control did use this
strange method for rev limitation, how could it tell what year was. It
would need an internal clock for that and why would it have one. If it
did have one you could just reset the clock by removing its power supply
and every thing would be fine again.
