Crane/RML Ignitions

last summer I installed the RML ARPI 401 ignition system in my GTV-6. The
set consisted of a Crane 3000 electronic box, a special coil (which may
also be Crane sourced), and a modified, rebuilt distributor.

RML clean and repair as necessary your distributor for the GTV-6. I
believe that they provide a new distributor for 4 cylinder cars. They mount
the Crane sourced optical trigger and custom advance springs. These springs
provide about 35 degrees of advance compared to the stock 30 degrees. Plus,
the instantaneous response is quicker than the stock vacuum setup.

I installed the electronic box on an unused bracked on the drivers side of
the car. The cables running from the distributor were too short, so I had
to make an extender harness that runs along the cross member below the
radiator. Otherwise, installation was simple.

The spark is considerably beefier than that of the stock unit,
scientifically determined by looking at a spark plug driven by each setup.
It has performed flawlessly, and my GTV-6 has started perfectly, even in
sub-freezing weather. However, the stock Bosch instllation in the GTV-6 is
not bad, so such a system is not as benefitial to 6 cylinder Alfas as
compared to the older points based 4 cylinder Alfas.

The difference between the purchase of a system from RML vs IAP or Crane is
that the optical trigger parts are installed and tested and that the
advance springs are changed and tested. Otherwise, they are essentially the
same (not so sure about the coil). I can vouch for RML's responsive service
too.

In short, I am very satisfied with the product. I have no connection with
RML , I am just a satisfied customer.
