Re:fishtailing leadsleds

To quote the late Ray Sharp, "it is a shame they didn't have an Alfetta
rear end". They were also noted in "Road and Track" for a lot of nose
dive under brakes.
OTOH, whilst road testing "topless in Tuscany" (Alfa SZ vs. F348 vs.
P911 floptops), despite the relative lack of horsepower, the only thing
that kept the SZ from severly embarrassing the 348 were the inferior
brakes.

Regan Dale Copple, Tongue Firmly In Cheek, points out that many of the
valid
claims which Alfa Romeo could and did make for the 105/115 Berlinas and
116
Alfetta sedans (and to a lesser extent for the corresponding coupes) are
negated by the Montreal.

That, of course, is what one might predict when an excellent bunch of
engineers designs a superbly thought-out chassis, and then somebody up
the
line uses it as a buck for an attention-getter styling exercise, and
then
tries to capitalize on the attention by "productionizing" the styling
exercise by doubling the horsepower and adding six hundred pounds of
dead
weight.

If, If, If. If Alfa Romeo had had the time and resources to develop the
Alfetta chassis with the Zagato Zeta body and the Montreal engine they
could
have had a luxury performance car with Alfa-caliber handling and
roadholding
and a truly timeless classic style. But they didn't have the money or
the time
to start over.
