Regan Dale Copple, Tongue Firmly In Cheek, points out that many of the valid
claims which Alfa Romeo could and did make for the 105/115 Berlinas and 116
Alfetta sedans (and to a lesser extent for the corresponding coupes) are
negated by the Montreal.

That, of course, is what one might predict when an excellent bunch of
engineers designs a superbly thought-out chassis, and then somebody up the
line uses it as a buck for an attention-getter styling exercise, and then
tries to capitalize on the attention by "productionizing" the styling
exercise by doubling the horsepower and adding six hundred pounds of dead
weight.

If, If, If. If Alfa Romeo had had the time and resources to develop the
Alfetta chassis with the Zagato Zeta body and the Montreal engine they could
have had a luxury performance car with Alfa-caliber handling and roadholding
and a truly timeless classic style. But they didn't have the money or the time
to start over.

I must disclaim first-hand knowledge- never drove a Montreal, never rode in
one, never even sat in one, never wanted one, never will want one. I am sure
that many of the people who have them are happy with them. Good luck to them,
and to the rest of us too.
