My guess is ground effects.... starting with the Lotus 78
(1978), the idea way to create an underbody that created a
negative pressure to help pull the car down on the track.
The need to channel the airflow between the rear wheels,
caused a trend to a narrower engine - alfa moved from a
flat-12 to a V12 around this time (1980?) - and a narrow
gearbox. Inboard rear brakes got in the way of underbody
airflow, and with the focus on downforce, the brakes were
moved outboard to the wheelhubs.

There were probably other reasons, but serodynamics would be
the main on.
