Hi Joe:
Don't know if there was ever any official mandate, but the downfall of inboard brakes in F1 began after several failures of the FRONT inboard brakes on the Lotus 72's. One such failure claimed the life of Jochen Rindt at Monza in '70, when one of the halfshafts failed. That's just my recollection, but at the time I was only 12 years old, and I think I read that in Road & Track magazine.
Regards,
Dean

Can anyone tell me when and why F1 constructors stopped using rear inboard brakes? Thanks, Joe
