It's common for the speed controller to fail. It consists of a small circuit board with a few coils of nichrome wire for resistors. When they get too hot one of the links can melt resulting in a dead fan. If you stick your head near the gas pedal and look up, you can see this doodad screwed into the black fan ducting. It's not easy but you can remove it. The service manual should tell you enough to trouble shoot it.
