Because you say internittent my guess is the pressure relief valve in the 
pump is sticking due to the engine bay getting hot now summer is here.
Valve perhaps worn and jamming a bit in the cylinder.
Solution 
Obtain new valve and spring.
Cover Alternator with Polythene bag.
Locate a small container near lower hydraulic hose to catch fluid.
Undo Hose union
Withdraw valve body and replace with new spring and valve body.
Replace hose
Top up reservior and  bleed system.

I saw the answer from Leon. He refers you to a filter.
Personally I found no filter mentioned in the ROM, Parts Catalogue, and I 
didn't find one inside the pump. Maybe there are some pumps around that are 
fitted with filters, but not mine.  I think a  number of Vehicles use this 
pump in various version.
