play in front wheeel bearings

I noticed a little bit of play in my front wheel bearings.  I went to
tighten the main hub nut, and just managed to line up the castle nut
with the the slot for the cotter/split pin.  Fortunately, this time
there is no play.  If I couldn't line it up, then would this little bit
of movement, 1 across flat, be ok?
