Alistair,

The speedo and mileometers are all driven from the speedo cable. My bet
would be that either the cable has come off the back of the speedo or it
has broken. 
Other possibilities apart from the ones you mention:-

No drive from gearbox (failure internal to gearbox or in right angle
adaptor attached to gearbox).

End of cable or socket at either end rounded off


Try taking the cable off the back of the speedo and see if the centre of
it rotates when you move the car along. This should prove which bit is
at fault.
