Stag Water Pump

The 12 vane water pump should be fitted with cover 218542, the 6 vane pump
with cover 217993.  The part number of the cover can be easily seen,
moulded into the cover.  It is definitely not a good idea to mix these
components as you could have either metal-to-metal contact or a whacking
great clearance to the impellor vanes which will make the pump virtually
useless!

If you are removing the cover, check the water pump gears to ensure there
is no undue wear on the gear teeth of the water pump or the jackshaft it
mates with, as there are some water pumps about with soft gears which wear
out very quickly.

There is no particular advantage in fitting the 12 blade water pump anyway
and if you still have the old unit, the simplest way out of this is to
rebuild your 6 vane pump with new bits and pieces.  This costs only a few
pounds and is therefore very much cheaper and much more satisfactory than
fitting a new suspect pump.
