Re: Stag Cylinder Head Studs



Please note that Peter Howells in his e-mails refers to using a higher
torque on the cylinder head studs, but the original type bright steel studs
are very liable to break at this higher torque. 

 If you decide to use this higher figure, bear in mind that:
a.  your torque wrench must be checked to be dead accurate whatever type of
stud you are using
b.  you need to be using the late type black oil-tempered studs, and not
the bright plated studs
c.  these cylinder heads are prone to distortion (don't we know it!) and
further tightening may well permanently distort them, particularly if the
head gasket has failed and is not now supporting the face of the head
itself under any studs.  Anti-freeze coming up the stud is a sure sign of
this.

I would never advocate the random re-torquing of cylinder head studs/bolts
every 6,000 miles.  It should ONLY be done 1,000 miles after fitment. 
Unless you KNOW you have a problem, do not do it because like a sleeping
dog it should not be disturbed if all is well, you could easily break a
good seal.
