You need a 6V coil to run properly with the resistor.
The idea behind is. During normal operation coil gets 6V as resistor takes the other 6V.
During starting you have a voltage drop due to the current the starter draws to about 8V ... during that phase the resistor is bypassed so the 6V coil gets 8V ... that's exactly what's needed to start firing.
