Steering weight

Hi, Brian

Only half a month to go now!

The steering 'weight' is handled by the control valve (see manual
page 57.00.01), the torsion bar strength determines the amount
of power assistance available. Thus fit a thin torsion bar and
bags of assistance, and vice versa. This item is not however a
serviced part as there is normally no reason to touch it. However
it could be changed as it is pressed in and retained with roll pins
top and bottom.

I would guess that if the steering is abnormally light, that
perhaps a recon rack has been fitted at some past time, and the
'wrong' control valve has been fitted, with a 'lighter' torsion bar in
it - maybe from a 2000/2.5 which is actually lighter at the front
than the Stag.

Interestingly enough, there has only ever been one ratio of
rack ever fitted to the Stag, at 3 turns lock-to-lock, despite
folk-lore to the contrary. Early literature including the 1970
manual says 4 turns lock to lock, but there is only one rack fitted,
although with a change of part number because the layout of
the rack-to-control valve pipe layout was changed at chassis
LD24187 (RHD). Myown Stag is 'early' type and has a '3 turns'
rack on it, still original. The only significant change made by Triumph
was from 16" to 14.5" wheel commencing from chassis LD20,000.
This makes a big difference both to 'feel' and comfort, while getting
in and out is better.

Hope this helps
