The Montecarlo shop manual states that special tool 88041158 should be
used to clamp the the stem cup while the strut nut is undone. Between
the shop manual and Haynes, it seems that this tool is a clamp with lugs
that fit into the slots in the top of the stem cup (the thick dished
washer that is located under the strut nut and is clamped onto the
rubber doughnut in the strut top mount). Hope this helps.
