Right before Y2K, I helped install a 5kw (I think) gas generator with my
Dad.  I'm not sure of the exact setup but someone was selling a kit -(box,
heavy duty bx, and some instructions). Basically we ran the generator to a
little switch box next to the main panel - somehow when they lose power they
just switch this box and turn on the generator - then technically the whole
house is powered - they just turn on the fridges, freezers, well pump etc.

Its a slick kit-no magic I'm sure to electricians, but neat to me - I do
everything eletrical but the box.

They've used it once in the last 4 years - for about 6 hours.  Ahh well its
still pretty neat even if the cost hasn't been justified.
