Anyways, the station manager (a former Scout guy) told me that using
the premium gas would help preserve the exhaust system, among other

probably worth it on that front alone. Time will tell if that was
simply a fluke reading or something legit.
I use premium to control the dieseling, but I don't know whether it affects gas mileage or not. My 33 gallon tank seems to have hidden nooks and crannies where gasoline can hide, so my mileage fluctuates too much to depend on any given number.

My advice would be to do what you've apparently decided to do, stay with the premium as long as your gas mileage holds up. Typically, here, premium costs about 10% more, but if that 10% gets you 13% ...... Well, you've already figured that out.

Glad Charley didn't do more damage to you than to cut your electricity for a while. I know nothing about home generating plants, but I know that propane plants run more trouble-free than gas or diesel for those utilities around here that have to have back up power.
