mine didn't have anything under it to go between it and the paint.  after it
finally gave up the ghost and fell off the truck, you can see where it
rubbed the paint off.  just wish my dad had stopped to pick it up when it
did finally come all the way off.  at least you have yours.  i'd say it's a
pretty good idea to have some kind of gasket or pad for it when you put it
back on to keep it from doing what mine did.  if you figure something out,
let me know, so i can do it for mine too.
