[ihc] Nick's 3 wheeler

Nick -

Glad you're OK on more than one count :)

This is a Scout II, right? Why'd you have to go and lose an axle within a
couple days of my bearing R&R post? :(

First thing I'd do is get a set of fresh Timken Set10's on those axles(or
Greg's uber-Link Belts), pull the inner seals if present, and over-fill the
diff. Swapping to a cover with a higher fill plug makes this easier. Front
covers from a high pinion Bronco have the highest fill plug I've seen, GM
and Jeep fullsize front covers are somewhere in between the Bronco and the
stock SII cover.

Folks have been reporting the Lock-o-matic friction shoes as
obsolete/unavailable for a number of years now. I'd try NAPA for the washer

Subject: [ihc] Lock-o-matic hubs, and disappearing axle

I have aquired a set of lock-o-matic hubs and would like to try them
out. One of the slotted washers that goes between the spindle nuts is
messed up. Does anyone know where I can get one. also one of the
little nylon friction shoes is cracked. I think it will still work but
would like to replace it.

While driving from detroit to grand rapids michigan for christmas my
drivers side tire, wheel, brake drum and axle shaft disapeared into thin
air. we looked for about an hour and a half until dark and never saw a
sign of it. The retaining collar was still in the tube and the
retaining plate was still attached.
I was suprised at how well the scout handled on only three wheels at 65
mph. never left my lane until I coasted to a stop on the side of the
highway.

I was about 30 miles from my sisters house so my brother in law came
with a trailer and we trailered it to his house. He has a bunch of
scout parts but no rear axle.
I found a local guy who wanted to get rid of a pair of complete d44
scout axles so I bought them. Thats where I got the lock-o-matic hubs.

The real bummer is that I just bought the tire ($140) in august.

good and an thinking about going back to work. I don't post much but I
