Thomas, i don't have a solution for you. my 4x4 TravelAll 1110 does what
you describe too. it's been doing it for months now. in my case, it's a
well-cared-for-before-i-got-it 392IC with a now-points ignition and analogue
Holley Pro-Jection 2-barrel fuel injection system and 727 tranny. i haven't
been able to find a vacuum leak, i have good spark and good wires, clean
Bosch Platinum plugs only a year and a half old, the injectors themselves
aren't surging, just the engine when i try to idle it once it's warmed up.
minor oil leak underneath, nothing serious there. minor transmission leak,
again nothing serious.

the Holley Pro-Jection has in-cab controls for just about everything. i can
turn the idle up to about 1200rpm (i do have a tach installed) and the
surging stops, but when i try to crank it back down to about 700 to 800 or
so, it starts that surging crap and it *will* die within a minute once it
starts that if i don't get in there and put my foot on the gas pedal or
crank up the idle knob. runs in traffic and down the freeway just fine.
same old seven or eight miles to a gallon, it'll go when i put my foot in
it; and it'll idle at a light with my foot on the brake, more or less, till
it starts surging again.

cold idle is fine, with or without the "choke" applied. but once it's
warmed up, forget it. surge and die. surge and die. anyway, what i'm
trying to tell you is that whatever the problem is, it does not appear to be
terminal to the engine. i have decent oil pressure, no fuel in the oil,
passable charging system, and respectable power (considering the lame cam,
anyway). if you can solve the problem for your own peace of mind, that's
great. but i wouldn't worry that the engine is dying because it's acting
like this. something wrong in the carb, i'd bet. but don't give up on the
engine just yet.
